a) Historical Perspectives
The Institute of Medical Research (IPEM) has a long tradition of training the next generation of scholars to become research professionals in academia. The postgraduate institution offers a variety of doctorate and master’s degree programs in the field of medical research. For nearly 25 years, over 230 theses were defended at IPEM, including masters and Ph.Ds. The institution offers the opportunity for candidates pursuing postgraduate degrees from basic sciences to translational and clinical research.
Historically until 1992, there were only two institutions in the southern region of Brazil offering students the opportunity to apply for postgraduate degrees, including Federal University of Parana (UFPR) and Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRS). In order to reach out to more candidates and offer them the opportunity to enroll in postgraduate courses, the Evangelical Beneficent Society of Curitiba created the Institute of Medical Research. The Society was in charge of the Medical School of Faculdade Evangelica do Parana and Evangelico University Hospital of Curitiba, considered the largest hospital complex in Parana State.
In 1993, IPEM was equipped with modern instruments and technology that enabled researchers to conduct experimental and laboratory projects as well as clinical works. The facility was designed to meet the requirements for conducting animal as well as laboratory experiments. Activities held at IPEM are exclusively research projects, experimental or clinical, conducted by postgraduate students and mentors. The facility was certified by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), an official surveillance department for conducting animal experiment and laboratory research, and launched several research projects in the field of medicine.
The institution is constantly seeking to improve the facility, providing the students with the best resources to conduct research projects. The high-quality postgraduate programs, the installation of modern equipment and the outstanding professionals involved in different projects at IPEM have attracted a great number of candidates seeking to obtain a high-standard postgraduate degree.
Since its creation, IPEM has made seminal contributions in the field of clinical and technological research. The institution has established the structural foundation for conducting experimental and laboratory research in the clinical and surgical field. Several clinical trials have been conducted under the supervision of outstanding professionals.
In 2015, one of our masters students, Dr. Roberta Rehder, a neurosurgeon from Curitiba, was doing a research fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery under the supervision of Dr. Alan R. Cohen, back then both were at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Since then, a collaboration was made with Dr. Alan R. Cohen, the Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
In 2016, a collaboration was made between Prof. Dr. Ana Maria Waaga-Gasser, Professor of Molecular Oncology and Immunology, Department of Surgery I - University of Wurzburg, Professor in Medicine, Brigham and Women´s Hospital - Harvard Medical School. The collaboration enabled creation of several master´s and Ph.Ds. theses on the correlation between the expression of tumor markers of different tissues and tumor aggressiveness.
b) Areas of scientific research in health and medicine: consistency, coherence and articulation
The institution has always advocated conducting research projects based on the following steps: specification of the area of research interest – research project design – conducting the research project – data gathering – publication.
These steps reflect the path of conducting a scientific project from its beginning until its publication. Each candidate enrolled in the program has to present a specific and detailed scientific project according to the areas of research offered by the institution and follow the steps until its publication. The candidate is also instructed to attend courses of academic training, especially those directly related to his or hers area of interest. The postgraduate program also encourages students to do internship in Brazil and abroad.
c) Certified and experienced professors
IPEM offers high-quality postgraduate programs based on a selected number of outstanding certified professors. Our faculty members are involved in numerous publications, research activities and teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
d) Support from the university hospitals with policies aimed at translational and technological research
Research projects conducted at IPEM are directly and indirectly related to the resources offered by Evangelico University Hospital of Curitiba, the largest private and public hospital complex of Paraná State. The university hospital provides a means for developing research projects in several medical specialties, including bariatric surgery, burn reconstruction and plastic surgery, vascular and endovascular surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, orthopedics and cardiac surgery. The hospital has approximately 600 occupancies to accommodate patients from all over the Parana State. Approximately 550 patients are seeing daily in outpatient clinics by the several medical specialties. The institution has one of the busiest trauma department of the city of Curitiba and the largest emergency room.
In a recent study reporting the efficiency of the top 100 public hospitals of Parana State, TCE-PR (State Audit Court of the State of Paraná), the Evangelico University Hospital of Curitiba was ranked first place. Such ranking of hospitals reflects the outstanding administration of the University Hospital and clear accountability to conduct initiatives in translational research at the institution.
e) Development of research projects funded by private practice
In 2015, a scientific partnership was signed between IPEN and the Paulo Nassif Institute, a private practice facility focused on obesity research. The Paulo Nassif Institute has a multiprofessional team working with obese patients, including surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists, physiotherapists and nurses. The institute offers opportunities to conduct new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of obesity and provide a means for the implementation of translational medicine in this particular field of interest.
