COURSE DESCRIPTION: Application of novel research methods using microscopic analysis on cellular biology. Introduction of new concepts on data gathering, storage, processing and analysis. Current methods of classifying tissue regeneration and applications of research on tissue engineering. Preparation and conditioning of tissues for study in scanning microscopy and electron microscopy.

 

 

THESIS DEFENSE AND PRESENTATION I

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Thesis Defense and Presentation I offers the candidate the opportunity to learn the requirements for presenting his or her dissertation before a committee.  The course offers important information on dress code, standard manners on how to approach the committee, presentation setup and timing. The candidate will be exposed to several dissertation samples, which will provide a means for improvements prior to the thesis defense.

 

 

THESIS DEFENSE AND PRESENTATION II

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The candidate must attend five thesis defenses and write a summary report on each defense.  The mentor will review each report with his or her mentee.  The mentor will submit an evaluation on the previous discussion with the mentee to the Course Administrator prior to granting the course credits.

 

 

BIOMARKERS OF TISSUE REGENERATION AND TUMORS I

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The course covers basic concepts on cellular and molecular biology and introduces novel research on tumor behavior and cellular interaction. Biomarkers on tumor diagnosis and aggressiveness will be reviewed and current concepts on tumor progression will be discussed, including growth, differentiation and apoptosis.  By the end of this course, the candidate will be able to understand the applications of optical and electronic microscopy and use the computerized image analysis system (SAMBA) and IMUNNO software.

 

 

BIOMARKERS OF TISSUE REGENERATION AND TUMORS II

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is exclusively available for candidates whose dissertations investigate molecular biology and tumor progression in surgical conditions. 

 

 

BIOSTATISTICS I

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Biostatistics I provides a basic introduction to probability and statistics with applications.  The emphasis is on the application of statistical methods to analyze data information and interpretation.  Among the specific topics include tools for testing statistical hypothesis and its application to group comparisons; choosing the appropriate statistical test to the scientific research; power and sample size in study design; describing central tendency and variability in data.

 

 

BIOSTATISTICS II

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Biostatistics II is an advanced course on statistical analysis. After the completion of the course, the candidate should be able to analyze, graph and present scientific data using a statistical software package.

 

 

ANIMAL EXPERIMENT IN RESEARCH

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The course introduces the requirements based on the Norwegian regulation on animal experimentation.  The course will cover the following topics: legislation, ethics, animal welfare, choosing the animal model, genetic and environmental factors influencing animal experiments, health hazards, anesthesia, analgesia, microbiological quality.  The candidate will learn management of experimental animals, including transportation, housing, environmental conditions, nutrition and veterinary care. Research Ethics Committees and COBEA. The vivarium and its characteristics depending on the animal species.

 

 

RESEARCH BIOETHICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The course introduces the ethical and regulatory aspects in medical research.  Among the important topics in research bioethics include research misconduct, authorship, plagiarism and responsibility in scientific publications. Ethical issues in stem cell, genetics, and organ transplantation will be discussed. The course covers patient´s rights and responsibilities as well as all the responsibilities of all the participants involved in the scientific research, such as principal investigators, fellows, research technicians and professors.

 

 

METHODS OF RESEARCH AND THESIS WRITING

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The course is intended to assist candidates develop writing skills to edit and format their theses and dissertations. The course presents writing guidelines and provides suggestions on how to choose appropriate words, transition and formal vocabulary.   The candidate will learn how to present a concise, objective and scientific thesis.

 

 

OBESITY AND GASTROENTEROLOGY
